After more than 6 decades of serving the community of Monroe, CT, Stepney Hardware came to a close in 2019. The 590 Main Street location was owned and operated by the Otto family since they bought it four years after it opened in 1959. David Otto, current owner, remembers spending time in the store as a 10 year old with his mother and father, Dorothy and Chap. David began running the store in the 1990s after his parents both passed away.
The news of the closure saddened the entire town of Monroe, marking the end of an era for an iconic part of the local community.
The news of this closure instantly resonated with W.E. Aubuchon Co., Inc. For more than six decades, Stepney Hardware focused on demonstrating exceptional customer service and community building - two core values of Aubuchon Hardware. “It’s a great town and a great community, these are all things we look for when we expand. In a way, it was an easy decision. We’re going to be here a long time.” said President and CEO, William E. Aubuchon IV.
We quickly decided to lease 10,619 square feet of space, including the former hardware store and an adjacent unit. The First Selectman, Kenneth Kellogg, welcomed us with open arms calling us "very community minded." Kellogg felt it was important to embody the small town feel of having a neighborhood hardware store. Although Aubuchon Hardware is not the same as Stepney Hardware, we believe we would align well with the small town business scene that Monroe strives to maintain.
As soon as we finalized our permitting with town officials, it was time for remodeling! After a full year of constant renovations, the day finally came! We were ecstatic to open our third Connecticut location!
The Grand Opening was on July 31 & August 1, 2020! This new location features two floors, showcasing premium brands such as Benjamin Moore Paint, Stihl Power Equipment, DeWalt Tools, Scotts Lawn Care Products and Maintenance, a grilling assortment featuring Weber, Grill Pro and Big Green Egg, as well as a propane filling station.
Though the ribbon cutting ceremony took place during the midst of the pandemic, everyone in attendance had a great time while still following all Connecticut state COVID guidelines. The day was filled with free samples, product demos, Aubuchon gift cards, special discounts, raffle prizes, and a Fiesta Taco Truck that provided free tacos to customers that spent $10 or more! An overall huge success! We are excited to be contributing to the tight-knit community of Monroe, CT!
